What is art?
Anyone can create “art”. Art can be a lot of things. It can be paintings, drawings, technical drawings, watercolor, ceramics, music, lyrics, poems, etc. It is a way for people to express their moods, ideas, thoughts into physical and visual forms. At times it can be creative and imaginative, and other times it is based on facts or subjects we see on a daily basis. It may also involve political, religious, and/or historical aspects as well. In fine arts, there are seven most common elements, line, shape, texture, form, space, color, and value. There are also the principles of art which are rhythm, harmony, balance, contrast, movement, proportions and variety. With these in mind, one is able to create any kind of art work they please. Everyone has all kinds of different styles of making art. There is almost no one else with the same exact style as another person, which makes it very unique and personal. Usually artists put a lot of emotions into their artworks, and they want to be able to have their audience feel the emotions from their art pieces.
What is Design?
There are two different types of design. They are both a process, the first can be defined as the initial markup of a final piece, kind of like a rough sketch or a plan. The second one is using materials, patterns, lines, and shapes used to decorate things. The elements of design are point, pattern, size, image, line, texture, typography, form, space. The compositions of design are balance, unity, rhythm, alignment, principles of design, repetition, emphasis, proximity. With these, one will be able to create the design they want. When designing, it is different from making art. The outcomes can be the same but the process of it can be very different. In designing, a designer puts more thought and process into their work. They focus more on how the outcome is going to be rather than putting emotions and feelings into it.
What is Craft?
Craft is an activity where it involves making things by hand. There can be many types of crafts, such as, paper crafts, decorative craft… etc. One can make all kinds of different things when it comes to craft, they can even find anything they want around the house that they see fit to add onto their art works. This goes all the way back to the olden days as well! In the middle ages or even earlier there were people who were also known as craftsperson/people, who produced small goods that they could use to exchange some goods. All throughout the world, many people have made many crafts for decorative use or to sell to others. Many believed that the things they made could hold spiritual and religious elements. A lot of traditions and culture has also been passed down through crafts by generations in different families across the world. Some could be professional but it is also a way for people to kill time or make it a hobby and add fun activities in their lives
What is the Relationship Between Creativity and Knowledge?
What is the difference between creativity and knowledge? Knowledge is an abstract quality that one can possess in the form of either facts, information or skills that are acquired through experience or even education. When an individual picks up a brush and paints the figure of a body, they are doing so from their prior knowledge of one's anatomy. However when that same individual sits in front of a canvas, picks up a brush and begins to paint from their imagination they are using what is known to be their creativity. Though it is important to note that levels of knowledge differ amongst individuals. Creativity on the other hand, involves the application of one's imagination as they are making use of their raw ideas. These two concepts are related since they both involve the use of the human brain. Study has shown that the right side of the brain conducts more creative thinking while the left side of the brain conducts more scholastic aspects such as science, mathematics and logic. Humans typically are able to access both the creative side and the knowledge side of our brains. However some of us use the right side of the brain more than the left and vice versa. With creativity, we sometimes base the ideas we want to form creations through our experiences, which is where the knowledge can come into play. Our experiences become a part of who we are and how or why we look at certain things differently which ultimately can affect the way we do things and create. When it comes to art I usually use the creative side of me, with equal amounts of knowledge. I use creativity to make my artworks unique and personal, but I also incorporate the knowledge and experience that I have learned throughout my art career to help with the consistency of my works.
Artist influence
As cliche as it may sound, artists are constantly inspiring other artists. From personal experience, I have always been inspired by Jenny Seville as her artwork is captivating and an inspiration to all young artists around the world. Figure drawings is a form of art that I have worked tirelessly to perfect, however my technique needs some more polishing. Through analyzing the work of Saville, I have been able to step out of my comfort zone and create artworks that I would mostly like not have before. Saville on the other hand, has mastered the art of figure drawings and throughout her childhood the human flesh and body fascinated her. Not only that but the distortion of the body is something that she creates in her art and highlights the “imperfections” of the human flesh and body. Whether it’s the lines, or the shades, what fascinates me the most about this particular artist is the intricate messages that are conveyed through her works. Observing her apply her imagination and step out of the norm inspires me to do so as well through new techniques and styles.
